Back in Bangladesh, Tetali was financially supporting his elderly parents, his widowed sister, and her three-year-old son. Since his arrival in Singapore in 2015, Tetali worked as a general construction worker, earning an average monthly income of $1,200. This job allowed him to send $800 regularly to his family, providing them with the means to survive.
However, Tetali is now faced with the relentless pressure to send remittances home and pay his accumulating debts, while his family faces harassment from debt collectors. He is uncertain about the duration of his recovery and is currently fighting to secure his rights and receive his Work Injury Compensation Act (WICA) claims with the assistance of a pro bono lawyer.
Last year, Tetali unwittingly signed a WICA withdrawal letter, exploited by his employer due to language barriers. To rectify this, he recently enlisted the help of a pro bono lawyer to reopen his WICA case and secure recognition for his permanent incapacity stemming from his injuries.
Despite the hardships and pain he has endured, Tetali diligently continues his physiotherapy exercises in the dorm, hoping for a speedy recovery. Once he receives his WICA claims, he hopes to return home and find a suitable job that accommodates his current condition.
