The Lai Yu Hua Kindness Youth Lit Fund
Lai Yu Hua Kindness Youth Lit Fund (赖育华爱心青年基金)
Since its inception, the Fund has supported:
1) Personalised therapy for children from low-income families in Boon Lay
At the foot of a rental block in Boon Lay, there’s a special place where hope takes root. The Tak Takut Kids Club (TTKC) stands as a beacon of possibility for children who need it most. Through the newly established Lai Yu Hua Kindness Youth Lit Fund, there’s now a safe community space for children to explore, learn and grow.
This is an initiative seeded by Laurence Putra Franslay and supported by 3Pumpkins. With the involvement of Singapore’s Voices of Loving Kindness (VoLK)— Dr. Geraldine Tan, Dr. Alicia Altorfer-Ong, and Laurence, in the pilot phase, this fund will make a big impact on children in Boon Lay facing learning challenges like dyslexia and ADHD.
As noted by Lin Shiyun, founder of 3Pumpkins: “Children from vulnerable backgrounds often come from families where relationships are disrupted, and caregivers are in different phases of finding stability.”
Children from low-income families face these hurdles more often, yet typical school support doesn’t fully address their needs. The Lai Yu Hua Kindness Youth Lit Fund will provide personalised therapies that fill this gap and give these children the tools to thrive.
TTKC’S holistic approach combines:
- Purposeful craft activities
- Community cooking sessions
- Music & dance programmes
- Specialized learning support
Through these spaces and activities, the team hopes to address challenges that often go unnoticed: a child afraid to report a lost ez-link card and going hungry, another struggling with mounting schoolwork, or one dealing with domestic difficulties. Their “child-first” approach creates a foundation of trust where children feel safe to open up and seek help.
2) Enrichment classes for children from lower-income families
Speaking in Parliament on 25th September 2025, Member of Parliament David Hoe proposed “curiosity credits”, which would give every child flexible credits for non-academic, enrichment classes like robotics, guitar or speech and drama – that would help them explore their interests outside a typical school setting.
Laurence initiated a 6-month pilot collaboration with charity partners Empowered Families Initiative (EFI) and Ray of Hope, which kicked-off in November 2025, to enable 9 children to enrol in enrichment classes. The families were nominated by EFI, which invests in the plans of lower-income families to improve their circumstances and socio-economic position.
Ranging from silat to gymnastics, piano to football, the children are participating in activities of their choice. Ray of Hope and EFI will conduct check-ins, at intervals, to get feedback from the children and parents.
If the initial outcomes are positive, the Fund will continue to support the children’s activities for an additional 6 months after the pilot phase. The findings will also enable us to propose a tested, collaborative framework for the “curiosity credits”.
3) Community-building through enrichment classes for youths in Clementi
To create opportunities for students from different backgrounds to mix, and to discover their interest in robotics, which they would not typically have a chance to learn in school. Additionally, to ensure that youths from disadvantaged backgrounds will have access to opportunities, to gain better self-awareness and pursue their interests in the future.
4) Financial support for multi-stressed families
Support for individual Ray of Hope families.
