Ray of Hope is raising $3,900 ($650 x 6 months) to help Wahidul with his and his family’s living expenses.

Islam Md Wahidul came to Singapore in 2018, seeking greener pastures. The 34 year-old Bangladeshi supports his family of 9 through his job as a general worker in a shipyard. Earning approximately $600 a month, Wahidul regularly remitted more than half his earnings to his family.

On 5th March 2021, Wahidul was carrying cables up the stairway, when he slipped and fell backwards. He injured his left thigh and left knee. As he was alone at the worksite, he reported this to his supervisor and was advised to take medication when he returned to the dormitory. Wahidul was sent to the hospital three days later, when the pain became unbearable. He was issued 42 days medical leave and was resumed work for 7 months until the pain in his thigh and knee struck again in November. Wahidul is now unfit for work, because of his serious injuries.

With huge family to support back home, Wahidul worries about his family’s finances. He was supporting his grandmother, parents and three school-going siblings. He also has an elder sister who is divorced and her 4 year-old daughter staying with the family.

Wahidul is currently attending weekly physiotherapy sessions and hope to return to work eventually.
