What happened to Shamime?

On 28 April 2022, Shamime fell while carrying hacking equipment and going down makeshift steps. The fall left him with an injured back and a torn left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Shamime was brought to a private clinic and was prescribed painkillers. These did not alleviate his pain and he eventually had an ACL operation on 30 December 2022. While his medical leave ends on 27th March 2023, Shamime is deeply worried as he still experiences persistent pain in his lower back and left knee, affecting his mobility and hence, his ability to resume work.

41-year-old Shamime is from Bangladesh. He found work here in Singapore as a Lifting Supervisor after paying hefty agent fees. Shamime was earning approximately $900 a month and as the sole breadwinner, he would remit the bulk of his salary to his parents and school-going siblings for their living and educational expenses, keeping around $300 for himself. 

After the accident, Shamime’s mobility was affected after the accident due to the persistent pain in his lower back and left knee. He hopes to recover by attending weekly physiotherapy sessions offered by an NGO and is determined to support his family once again.
