Job loss leaves a family of 6 worried about their future
At 52, Jasmine* has spent most of her adult life working hard to provide for her family.
She was not able to pursue higher education, but she built a career through years of effort and commitment. Her income helped her support the household, while her husband’s earnings as a driver went towards their four children and daily expenses.
Together, they lived simply, planned carefully, and did their best to give their children a safe and loving home. Jasmine also continued caring for her teenage son with special needs, who requires ongoing care and support, while supporting her elderly mother.
“I’ve always believed that if I’m able to work, I’ll do my best for my family,” Jasmine says. “As long as they’re safe and cared for, I’m happy.”
When Jasmine Lost her Job
In March 2025, Jasmine’s employer ceased operations. She unexpectedly lost the job she had worked hard to keep.
Since then, she has been applying for permanent roles while taking on temporary contract work whenever possible. Despite her years of administrative experience, finding employment has been difficult. Without formal qualifications, she often competes with applicants who have stronger academic credentials.
Although the family explored available financial assistance schemes, they were assessed to be ineligible based on household income. In reality, the loss of Jasmine’s steady income has left them struggling to keep up with rising costs, caregiving needs, and household bills.
Falling Behind
Jasmine has always been careful with money, but every purchase now requires even more thought. She buys groceries in bulk whenever possible, keeps household spending to a minimum, and the family rarely eats out. Their children participate only in subsidised activities, and every dollar is directed towards essentials.
Even then, the family has fallen behind on utility bills, Town Council charges, and their HDB mortgage. Jasmine is most worried about falling further behind on the mortgage and losing the home her children depend on.
“It’s not just a house,” Jasmine says. “It’s where my children feel safe. I just want to keep our home.”
Alongside these financial pressures, Jasmine continues to care for her son with special needs while also supporting her elderly mother. Balancing these caregiving responsibilities while searching for work has been physically demanding and emotionally exhausting.
“He has taught me so much,” she says. “Whenever I feel discouraged, I look at him. If he can keep trying, then I can too.”
It is these everyday moments that give Jasmine the strength to continue searching for work and believing that this difficult season will pass.
What We’re Raising Funds For
Jasmine’s greatest hope is to secure employment and regain financial independence. Ray of Hope is raising funds to help cover:
- Utility arrears: $1,130.55*
- Town Council arrears: $1,137.25*
- Living expenses: $5,200* (approximately $1,300 per month for four months)
in the hopes that the family will be able to catch up on their outstanding mortgage repayments
How Your Support Will Help
For Jasmine, this support means more than keeping up with bills. It means protecting the home her children know, maintaining stability during a difficult period, and giving her the opportunity to return to work and provide for her family once again.
“I don’t expect life to be easy,” Jasmine says. “I just hope for the chance to work again, stand on my own feet, and give my children the security they deserve.”
