What happened to Letchumy? 

Letchumy felt hopeful for a happier future when she met her second husband, Sebastian. However, her joy was short-lived as he was stabbed in the kidney while trying to break up a fight in November 2022, less than a month after their wedding. Post-surgery and treatment, Sebastian continues to experience severe pain and relies on painkillers to manage it. This compromised his ability to work as a Kitchen Supervisor, and after a series of pay adjustments, he eventually resigned due to his health issues.

This tragedy left Letchumy greatly distressed. She is torn between the care of her husband, her 12-year-old daughter from her first marriage and the dilemma of how to make ends meet.

Your gift will go into supporting Letchumy’s family with their basic needs ($560 per month) over the next 5 months. This will greatly alleviate the financial burden on the couple, while they work on recovery and gaining employment.

Letchumy was close to her mother as her father was frequently absent. He was incarcerated for years at a time for drug-related offenses, leaving Letchumy and her siblings under his wife’s care. It was a huge blow to the family when their sole pillar was diagnosed with cancer in 2015, and they were devastated when she passed away in 2019.

Not wanting a fatherless childhood for her own daughter, Letchumy was overjoyed when she got remarried in 2022. When Sebastian’s stabbing injury happened, she was overwhelmed. Their dreams, together with their financial stability, seemed to crumble in an instant. Now, Letchumy splits time between caring for her husband and her daughter, who will be taking her PSLE in a few months’ time.

In addition to caring for her husband who has only fully recovered from the kidney surgery and complications, she accompanies him for his follow-up appointments for his shoulders that were also injured during the accident. Letchumy hopes to secure part-time employment during this period to alleviate the financial strain on the family. Once her daughter progresses to secondary school, Letchumy plans to switch to full-time employment.
