We all have a stake in building a stronger, more inclusive community in Singapore. Ray of Hope’s Building Community Champions initiative promotes inclusion through creating regular opportunities for migrant volunteers and local volunteers to be more socially connected.
Why migrant workers?
As of June 2023, Singapore hosted approximately 714,500 work permit holders, the majority of whom are employed in labor-intensive sectors such as construction, domestic work, manufacturing, and marine-shipyard industries. These migrant workers come from Bangladesh, India, China, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, etc.

However, their contributions to the economy are often accompanied by numerous challenges. These include facing exclusionary work conditions, enduring unregulated working hours and limited mobility imposed by employers, encountering social stigma and discrimination based on nationality and job roles, and grappling with personal hardships such as family separation and cultural differences.
Building Community Champions strengthens the friendships first formed during Ray of Hope’s cricket friendlies in 2022 and 2023. This initiative seeks to nurture volunteer leaders from different backgrounds, to eventually drive inclusive community projects together.
Building Community Champions campaign aims to:
Nurture volunteer leaders from diverse backgrounds, who will eventually spearhead inclusive activities and strengthen social cohesion.
Increase the number of opportunities for both migrant and local volunteers to engage meaningfully in community initiatives.
The funds will go towards:
Covering event expenses beyond what each community partner can provide; and
Supporting migrant volunteers with costs (transportation from dormitories, venues and meals, etc).
Recurring donation:
Community building is a long-term endeavor, and every one of us has a part to play! We invite your support for Building Community Champions, with a monthly, tax-deductible contribution of $10, as part of the community’s stake in this initiative.
With each successive event, we create opportunities for all volunteers to actively engage and contribute meaningfully.
To date, Building Community Champions has focused on sports:
#1 Football (Nov 2023), co-organised with St Patrick’s School football CCA.
#2 Bowling (Feb 2024), co-organised with Singapore University of Social Sciences’ bowling team. Read more about the event here.
#3 Frisbee and Games (May 2024), co-organised with students from St Joseph’s Institution
#4 Art jamming and Sports (June 2024), co-organised with students from Tampines Meridian Junior College
#5 Yoga and Wellness (September 2024)

Building Community Champions (Bridging Hearts) on 30th June
With every event, we get to know fellow volunteers better, and continue conversations from where we’d left off. Building Community Champions (Bridging Hearts) was a good mix: 100 volunteers from 8 secondary schools and junior colleges, 5 institutes of higher learning, 3 dormitories, 2 charity partners, and 7 countries. We played games to warm up……

We played games to warm up and break the ice and tried art jamming, the first time we tried a non-sport activity. Every one had a story to share!
The programme was organised by student volunteers from Tampines Meridian Junior College. Thanks to St Joseph’s Institution (SJI) for opening your doors to Ray of Hope once again, and to the SJI NPCC cadets for facilitating the anti-scam awareness segment. With monthly BCC events lined up from September until November, at the close of the day there were no goodbyes — only, “see you again!”

St Joseph’s Institution (SJI) partnered Ray of Hope to host the third in our series of Building Community Champions. Kudos to the organising committee of 10 Sec 4 SJI students for initiating this project, and for assembling a top-notch programme that was both fun and meaningful — from ice breakers to karaoke, captain’s ball to cricket, football to frisbee. Thanks also to the volunteers from Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, College of Alice & Peter Tan, and individuals from Ray of Hope’s network who share our mission to build a stronger, more inclusive community. We are also grateful to the 40 migrant volunteers for their trust and friendship, and for spending their day off with us. Many of them are Community Champions who enjoy befriending other volunteers too. The sun was blazing, yet it was the warmth from friendly encounters that surely won the day!

The true cost of our infrastructure lies in the sacrifice of our migrant colleagues. Let us aid those whose circumstances leave room for improvement, so that we may live with integrity; in the spaces bestowed upon us.
