A Hardworking Father Left Without Support
When Ray of Hope’s case manager first met Nayon, he greeted them with a smile and a friendly “Zhè biān?” (“This way?”), showcasing the simple Mandarin he had picked up over his 16 years of working in Singapore.
Nayon, a father of two young children aged 10 and 6, has always been dedicated and hardworking, providing for his family back home. But his life took a turn in July 2024 when a workplace accident left him injured and struggling to receive the care he deserved.
A Workplace Fall That Fractured His Tailbone
On July 27, 2024, Nayon was climbing a ladder with a safety harness to fix pipes when one of the pipes came loose. The structure gave way, and he fell onto the walkway below, fracturing his tailbone and leaving him in excruciating pain.
“For 16 years, I no trouble work here. This is my first time injured at work. How come I have to go home? I take care company, why company no take care me?” Nayon shared, voicing his heartbreak and confusion.
Despite the severity of his injury, Nayon was not taken to a hospital. Instead, he was sent to a polyclinic and given just two days of medical leave. When his pain persisted, he sought help from a GP and was granted three additional days of rest, but still received no further support for medical care.
On August 7, 2024, unable to bear the pain any longer, Nayon borrowed money from friends to visit the A&E at Changi General Hospital. There, he finally received proper medical attention and was given 14 days of hospital leave. But his struggles were far from over.
Struggling Through Recovery
Simple daily activities, like using the toilet, remain a painful challenge for Nayon. He is currently housed in a dormitory near the T5 Changi Airport construction site — far from community clinics, friends, and essential services. The isolation and lack of support make his recovery even more difficult.
To add to his burdens, Nayon had to pay $260 out of pocket for a medical appointment at Changi General Hospital, further depleting his limited resources.
Holding On to Hope
Despite his hardships, Nayon’s hope remains steadfast, especially for his children’s future.
“I want my children to go find job overseas when they grow up. Not work like me, but work office overseas,” he says, his eyes filled with dreams of a better life for them.
How You Can Help
Ray of Hope aims to raise $2,060 to support Nayon during this difficult period. This amount will cover:
6 months of living expenses ($300 per month) so he can focus on recovery without worrying about day-to-day needs.
Reimbursement of $260 for the medical bill he had to pay out of pocket.
