When Progress Starts to Take Shape
When 2-year-old Salim was first introduced to our community, he was taking his very first steps into physiotherapy after months of medical challenges (read his story here: https://rayofhope.sg/campaign/baby-salim/).
Since then, consistent therapy sessions twice a week have helped Salim grow stronger. Now, at this stage of development, continuing his sessions is crucial.
Why This Stage Matters So Much
The physiotherapy Salim receives builds the basics of movement that many families take for granted. Since starting weekly sessions, Salim has made steady progress. He can tolerate longer therapy activities, hold himself with better control, and practise moving between positions. These are early but essential skills that form the foundation for crawling and future mobility.
Progress for Salim does not come in big leaps. This comes slowly, through patience and repetition. Some days are easier than others, but each session strengthens his body a little more and gives him greater confidence in what he can do.
“Salim has weekly physiotherapy and he has shown steady improvements in his exercise tolerance, strength and stamina. He has also shown good improvements in his core strength and trunk stability. He demonstrates good weight bearing through his upper and lower limbs. Salim is now able to walk with support over his thighs”, his physiotherapist shared.
Salim’s physiotherapist has shared that the next four months are especially important. Continued therapy during this period can help improve his sitting balance, strengthen his muscles further, and support his journey toward independent movement. If therapy stops now, there is a real risk that the strength he has worked hard to build over 7 months could stall or slip.
A Family Giving All They Can, And Still Needing Help
Salim’s parents have reorganised their lives around his care. Lianah left her full-time administrative job to become Salim’s primary caregiver, making sure he attends therapy and continues his exercises at home. Haiqal works as the family’s sole breadwinner.
They are able to manage basic household needs, but physiotherapy costs $280 per session. Over time, this is not something the family can sustain on their own.
Even so, they keep going. Every day, they repeat Salim’s exercises at home, often turning playtime into therapy without him realising it. They celebrate the smallest improvements, knowing that each one adds up.
How You Can Help
Ray of Hope is raising $7,950 to cover another 3 months of physiotherapy for Salim. This support helps ensure that the progress he has already made can continue.
With ongoing therapy, Salim can keep building strength and confidence in his movements, one small milestone at a time.
