At 53, Thivya has spent most of her life standing on her own. With limited formal education, she found ways to earn a living and remain independent.

For years, she moved from one rented room to another. It was never the most financially stable situation, but she saved where she could. After attending a security course, she worked steadily as a security officer for 19 years, building her CPF savings little by little.

Just last year, she reached a milestone she never thought possible. At 52, she bought her own two-room flat and moved in.

“It was my house,” she said. “I earned it with my own hard work.”

Just months later, everything changed.

What happened

On 2 April 2025, Thivya underwent an angiogram. Three days later, she suffered a stroke. She has been hospitalised since then, spending the past eight months away from the home she had just begun to settle into.

“I miss my home,” she shared quietly. “It’s sad that I didn’t get to enjoy much of it.”

How she’s trying

Recovery has been difficult. Thivya currently needs help with four out of five daily activities, with eating being the only task she can manage on her own.

Even so, she remains committed to her rehabilitation. She attends physiotherapy and occupational therapy, takes her medication as prescribed, and continues work toward regaining enough independence to return home one day.

Emotionally, the long hospital stay has weighed on herl. Being away from familiar surroundings for so long has been hard, especially knowing she finally had a place of her own to return to. Still, she holds on. What keeps her going is the belief that this chapter does not have to define the rest of her life.

Thivya’s current barriers

Before her stroke, Thivya was working and managing her own expenses. Today, she has no income and no family support. Her eligibility for SSO assistance remains uncertain, leaving her financially exposed.

She has been away from her home for about eight months, relying on friends to help manage her household bills and finances. This dependence has been stressful, as she knows these friends are also managing their own health concerns and family responsibilities.

Her discharge timeline remains unclear. While longer-term support options are being explored, there is a gap that needs to be bridged now. The stress of unpaid household bills and uncertainty can affect her recovery.

Support now will give her stability during these months of waiting, time to heal, adapt, and prepare for the next stage of care.

What the money will cover

Funds raised will support Thivya over an eight-month period, while her medical condition and housing arrangements are closely monitored.

$253.50 per month will help cover:

  1. Basic daily living expenses while she remains without income
  2. Support for utilities
  3. Town council charges
  4. Ongoing needs while she continues rehabilitation and awaits clearer discharge and care plans

This support will ease immediate financial pressure, allowing her to focus on recovery and next steps.
