Six Months of Groceries for Mr Abdullah
Mr Abdullah is 80 years old and lives alone in a 1-room rental flat. It is a small space, but it is his home.
He survives on a monthly retirement payout of about $390. For years, he relied on his savings to supplement this amount. Little by little, those savings ran out. Now, the $390 must cover everything.
There is no regular family support to lean on. At his age, finding employment to supplement his income is not a realistic option.
He speaks softly about how he manages. “Sometimes I just make do with whatever food is left at home until my next payout comes,” he shared.
Most days are spent carefully stretching what he has and hoping it will last until the next payment comes in.
When $390 Must Last
Thirty days is a long time when $390 is all you have.
Groceries, toiletries, utilities, transport, and medical needs all come from this single sum. As prices rise, the same amount buys less each month. Mr Abdullah cuts back wherever he can.
He has stopped attending his medical check-ups because he cannot afford the related costs. It was not a decision he made lightly. Healthcare feels out of reach when there are days he is already rationing food.
Without savings or regular family support, Mr Abdullah faces ongoing financial uncertainty and the risk of not having enough food and essentials to last through the month. As the end of the month approaches and his funds run low, he relies on whatever is left in the kitchen. He goes without small necessities that many of us would not think twice about buying.
This has become his routine, counting carefully, spending cautiously, and hoping nothing unexpected happens.
Six Months of Support
We are seeking to raise $1,832.40* to provide Mr Abdullah with $300 per month for six months to cover groceries and basic household expenses.
An additional $300 each month would mean he does not have to ration meals or skip essential items to make it through 30 days. It would allow him to return to his medical check-ups without worrying about how to pay for them. It would give him room to breathe.
During this time, Mr Abdullah will also be referred to a Family Service Centre for assessment and exploration of longer-term support options. The six months of assistance will help meet his immediate needs while more sustainable arrangements are considered.
At 80 years old, Mr Abdullah should not have to choose between food and healthcare. This support will help ensure that his remaining years are lived with greater comfort and dignity, in the home he has managed to hold onto.
