Ahmmed Sumon is a 34-year-old Bangladeshi general worker with experience in the construction industry. On 31st May 2021, Sumon injured his shoulder and back while carrying a long, 100kg+ concrete pre-cast panel. He bore the load alone at one end, while his colleague used a trolley at the other end. After performing this grueling task repeatedly, Sumon collapsed under the heavy weight. He was sent to hospital and was warded for a night. In addition to sustaining shoulder and back injuries, he also suffered a urinary infection. One year on, Sumon is still plagued by the injuries and infection.
Throughout the time that he worked in Singapore, Sumon never once visited his family. He worked hard to support his family in Bangladesh, often working 7 days a week with regular overtime. Sumon earned approximately $800 each month and remitted more than half of his salary to his family. Due to Sumon’s injury, his family now has no other means to support his elderly parents, wife and two children.
