Bo Dayong, 46, is the main provider for his family of 5. His salary helped to support his 77 year-old widowed mother, wife and 12 year-old son, as well as a younger brother. In December 2019, Dayong came to Singapore with the hope of providing a better life for his family in China. After working for over a year, he returned home because his father’s health was diagnosed with cancer. The older Bo passed away soon after.
Dayong returned to Singapore in April 2021 and worked as a cook. He earned $2200 a month and was able to remit $1,500 to $1,600 home. Unfortunately, he met with an accident at his workplace on 27th August 2021, barely four months into the job. His right ankle crashed into a metal kitchen appliance as he rushed to fulfil orders.
Instead of sending Dayong to the hospital, his employer gave him medication to soothe the pain. Only after the wound started bleeding and the pain became more intense did Dayong consult a doctor. He was scheduled for surgery on 3 February 2022. However, his employer refused to let him seek treatment. Instead, they wanted to send him back to China. Until today, Dayong still feels immense pain on his ankle whenever he walks.
Dayong has fully repaid the loans that he had taken for agent fees through his four months on the job. However, his family has incurred debts to cover their living expenses, as Dayong was unable to send money home the past six months. He is eager to recover and to resume working so that he can support his family. He has been going for weekly traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) sessions.
