Help a 22-year-old breadwinner finish school
Campaign started on 2019-07-23Campaign Story
Background
Irhwan is only 22 years old, yet he is the sole breadwinner after his father walked out on the family in the middle of December last year, the day after he completed his National Service. Irhwan is currently supporting his 46-year-old mother who is unable to work as she has depression. His younger sister is only 14 years old and she is also suffering from depression. His 19-year-old younger brother is studying full time at ITE and the family currently resides in a rental flat.
Irhwan is studying for his Higher Nitec and has 1 semester left to complete. He had to defer his studies in March this year in order to work as he needed to support his family. When his father walked out on the family late last year, they were left with arrears with HDB and SP and he was struggling to put food on the table.
The Struggle
It has not been easy for Irhwan. Having to provide for his family and going to school has taken a toll on him. Due to mounting arrears and having to provide for his family, he decided to defer his studies in order to work. Irhwan understands the importance of education in Singapore. Without proper education, Irhwan will not be able to find good employment in the future. Poverty can be a vicious cycle and only education can break the cycle.
Ray of Hope’s case manager has spoken to Irhwan about his future and he will now be returning to school in October this year to complete his final semester. The semester runs for 6 months and thereafter, Irhwan will be actively seeking full time employment to fully support his family.
Give Hope – Help Needed
Ray of Hope would like to raise S$2,400 (S$300 x 8 months) to defer the family’s living expenses so that Irhwan can concentrate in school. The family is receiving government financial assistance and with the assistance received from Ray of Hope, Irhwan will finally be able to complete school. Please give hope to Irhwan and his family and no donation is too small!
