For over a decade, this family of six has been making the best of their small two-room rental flat. Despite their efforts to create a livable space, their home remains overcrowded and uncomfortable, affecting their children’s ability to focus on school and their overall well-being. Now, with the sole breadwinner facing multiple injuries and unemployment, the family is in urgent need of support to refurbish their home and improve their daily living conditions.

A Family’s Resilience Amidst Struggles

The family moved into their rental unit in 2011 after numerous unsuccessful attempts to secure a Build-To-Order (BTO) flat. While they were grateful for a space of their own, the reality of their cramped living conditions soon set in. The parents have made sacrifices, giving up their bedroom so that their four children could have a space of their own. However, this means that they have been sleeping in the living room for years, and their daughter still lacks the private space that she needs.

The father, once the family’s sole provider, had to resign from his job after being diagnosed with a slipped disc in 2024. Since then, he has suffered additional injuries—a spinal fracture, a fractured toe, and a middle finger injury—leaving him unable to work and in chronic pain. His wife, an LTVP holder, is unable to work, and the family now relies entirely on social assistance to survive.

A Home That Needs Urgent Improvement

With four growing children, the family’s two-room rental flat is becoming increasingly unmanageable. The sleeping arrangement is cramped, with the three younger children co-sleeping on a mattress on the floor, while their eldest sleeps on a top bunk. The lack of ventilation leads to an ongoing damp smell in their bedroom.

The kitchen serves multiple functions—not only as a cooking space but also as the only laundry area. With six people’s laundry drying in the same space, poor ventilation causes clothes to remain damp and develop an unpleasant smell.

Storage is also a significant challenge, with most belongings stored in plastic drawers stacked throughout the home, making the space feel cluttered and disorganized. The mother, who dreams of a cleaner and more spacious home, has shared how frustrating it is to wake up every day to the mess, knowing that there is no proper storage to keep their home organized.

A Brighter Future for the Family

Despite these struggles, the family remains hopeful. The parents have always prioritized their children’s education, believing that a better home environment will enable them to focus on their studies, achieve better grades, and secure brighter futures. Their mother says, “Everything starts from home. With a clean home, my children can focus on their schoolwork better. Then they can get better grades. Eventually, they have a brighter future.”

However, without financial assistance, they will not be able to afford the much-needed improvements to their home.
