Ray of Hope is raising $3,470 ($694 x 5 months) for Lakshimi. The assistance will help with Lakshimi’s groceries and skin care products, so that she can focus on seeking employment.
Lakshimi lives with her husband, Arun, and their two children in a two-room rental flat.
27 year-old Lakshimi has been the sole breadwinner since Arun’s incarceration in February 2021. Arun returned to the family in June and has been helping to care for their children, aged 5 and 7.
Lakshimi was working as a Customer Care Officer, earning a nett salary of approximately $2,300 a month. Unfortunately, the company did not renew her contract. Her last day of work is 31st August and she has been actively looking for a new job.
Lakshimi suffers from asthma and eczema. Her skin condition is triggered by stress and has worsened over the past few months. Lakshimi spends approximately $294 a month on skin care products such as soap-free shower gel, steroid creams and moisturisers. These expenses are not covered by medical subsidies, but are important in helping to keep Lakshimi’s eczema in control. In this way, Lakshimi can better support her family when she her own health is being taken care of.
Arun has work experience in events and logistics. He is also seeking employment to supplement the family’s income. However, his past criminal record and health issues, including heart palpitations, high blood pressure, gastric and anxiety issues make it challenging for him to work. In the past year, Arun has suffered more frequent blackouts and seizures. He is also following-up with a doctor, for suspected epilepsy.
Lakshmi and Arun had made plans for their young family. The family also hopes to own a home in time to come. However, those plans were disrupted by multiple stressors, including Lakshimi’s sudden termination and their health issues.
The couple’s biggest worry is putting food on the table for their children.
*Lakshimi and Arun are not receiving social assistance. They have applied for assistance.
