A daughter who gave her all now needs time to recover.

For more than 20 years, 44-year-old Lynn has been the sole caregiver for her elderly parents, Mr and Mrs Ang. She left her job as an accounts assistant in 2017 to care for them full-time, supporting their dialysis, dementia, mobility, and hygiene needs alone. With no siblings to share the load, she gave her days—and nights—entirely to their care.

In 2023, Ray of Hope supported Lynn with six months of elder-sitting services. But by 2024, her body and mind began to give way. She developed multiple chronic conditions—anxiety, depression, low blood pressure—and fainted three times from sheer exhaustion. Eventually, Lynn made the painful but necessary decision to place her parents in a nursing home to prioritise her own recovery.

Still Showing Up: Even After Moving Her Parents to a Nursing Home

Though she’s no longer their full-time caregiver, Lynn continues to be present in every way she can. She visits the nursing home as often as her health allows—daily when possible, never more than a week apart. She feeds and cleans her parents, manages their medications, and even helps other residents when staff are overwhelmed.

She does this while battling a painful shoulder injury that may require surgery. Medical escort services are too expensive, so Lynn still accompanies her father to hospital appointments herself—despite the toll on her health.

Grieving Her Mother, Protecting Her Father

On 14 April 2025, Lynn’s mother passed away. Lynn is still in the midst of grief and managing funeral arrangements. Yet she continues caring for her father, who does not know his wife has passed.

Lynn cannot bear to tell him. After witnessing how he declined following the death of his brother, she fears what this loss might do. So she puts on a brave face every visit. When he asks, “Where is your mother?”, she gently changes the subject.

No Income, No Time to Heal: Why Lynn Can’t Work Yet

Since her mother’s passing, Lynn has lost half of the combined government payouts the family relied on. Her caregiving duties left her unable to pursue full-time work, and her current health challenges including shoulder injury, anxiety, and chronic fatigue make employment impossible for now.

Though she continues escorting her father to up to five appointments a month, it causes severe strain. Still, she carries on, because in her words: “For my parents.”
