Mdm Margaret, 65, is the full-time caregiver for her 69 year-old bedridden husband. She also cares for their 43 year-old daughter who has suffered from mutism and hearing impairment since a bout of high fever when she was a toddler.
Mdm Margaret’s husband, Mr Tham, had a stable job until mid-2018, when he had an intracranial haemorrhage. He fell into a coma after the surgery and was bed-bound thereafter, entirely dependent on Mdm Margaret to take care of his daily needs. For some time, their family subsisted on the couple’s savings, which have since been depleted.
When the caseworkers spoke to Mdm Margaret, she shared that taking care of her bedridden husband has taken a toll on her health. Every day, she needs to transfer him from the bed to the bathroom to shower him. Moving him daily to and fro without a transfer chair has been challenging as Mdm Margaret now suffers from occasional numbness in her hands.
Financially, the family relies on the payouts from Mr Tham’s retirement account and ElderShield, as well as some income from their daughter’s job as a freelance food delivery rider.
*Mdm Margaret is not receiving social assistance, but has applied for a renewal.
