37 year-old Mdm Sofea, mother to 4 young children,  is a woman whose journey embodies the strength of the human spirit and the power of family support.

Having been through multiple adverse childhood experiences, Mdm Sofea did her best to constantly come out of every situation stronger. However, after an unexpected crisis that plunged her family into debt in October 2023, Mdm Sofea developed mental health challenges. Struggling with depression and anxiety issues, the once independent Mdm Sofea now required a full-time caregiver and was certified unfit for work for a duration of one year. She found solace and support in her husband, who quit his job to ensure her safety, and the wellbeing for the family. The couple believed that as they supported each other and attended to the needs of their children, they would come out of the situation stronger than before. 

How can you help?

As Mdm Sofea slowly recovers, she hopes to upskill herself so that she would qualify for better paying positions when she returns to the workforce. With only an ‘O’ Levels certificate to her name, she wants to enrol in a part-time business Management (Human Resource) Diploma course.  The campaign seeks to support her aspirations in funding her course fees.

The cost breakdown is as follows: 

1. Application fee: $130.80 (one-time)
2. Student Development Fee for workshops: $163.50 (one-time)
3.  1st instalment: $1,620.00
4. 2nd instalment: $1,620.00
5. 3rd instalment: $1,355.70
6. 4th instalment: $1,355.70

Mdm Sofea’s journey

Growing up in an abusive and dysfunctional home where love and stability were scarce, Mdm Sofea learned early on the importance of resilience and determination. She recounted many experiences of facing verbal and physical punishment for the slightest mistakes, of different experiences that made her question if she was wanted or loved as a child. However, she refused to let her past define her, instead choosing to channel her experiences into a driving force to become the best mother she could be for her own children between the ages of 1 to 8. Mdm Sofea is determined to break the cycle and create a brighter future for her own family.

With her husband, they believed that they were able to build a brighter future for their children. When they got their first purchased apartment together, and moved out of their HDB rental apartment, their resolve and effort seem to have paid off.

This made it all the more devastating when they went through a situational crisis that landed them in debt. Compounding their challenges were strained relationships with their respective families, stemming from their time of financial troubles. This meant that on top of their financial woes, they are bereft of familial support and care.

This campaign seeks to rally support for Mdm Sofea’s journey of upskilling. It is clear that in spite of their recent challenges, the couple has not given up.

“I have gone through a lot in my life, but I hope to set a good example to my children.” declares Mdm Sofea, in her interview with our Ray of Hope caseworker.
