Ray of Hope is raising $2,400 ($400 x 6 months) to help Polash with living expenses as he recovers.
Polash, 39, is a general worker from Bangladesh. He came to Singapore to work in November 2021, in the hope of providing for his elderly parents, wife and two children, with a better life.
On 23rd December 2021, Polash was lifting a metal scaffolding when his back gave way. Polash went to a polyclinic on his own, instead of waiting for the company transport, because the pain was excruciating. He had an X-ray and MRI done at the hospital and was advised that surgery was not needed, but that therapy would be required for recovery.
Unfortunately, Polash’s employer and supervisor were unhappy with him taking medical leave. On 29th December 2021, the supervisor and employer assaulted Polash — the two men pinned him down, then punched and slapped him multiple times. A police report was filed against them subsequently.
Throughout his time working in Singapore, Polash has never once visited his family in Bangladesh. He worked hard to support his family, often 6 days a week with regular overtime. Polash earned approximately $1,000 every month and remitted more than half of his salary to his family. Due to his injury, he now has no other means to support his family.
