Campaign Story

Ray of Hope has previously assisted Madam Letch* and raised S$1,050 for the 53-year-old single mum who was struggling with her living expenses after suffering a severe pay cut. The case workers recently caught up with the resilient mum and understand that she has since changed employment for a higher paying job. Madam Letch is currently working as a phlebotomist in a hospital, and draws a gross income of S$2,700. We also met her daughter who has moved home to be with her since a couple of months back.

Madam Letch told us that she is much at ease to be reunified with her daughter, who is also her sole moral and emotional support as the both of them share a close relationship. Madam Letch’s daughter is also recovering well from her eye abrasions, and her eyesight has recovered as she has been diligently going for her medical check-ups.

Financial wise, Madam Letch said that she is positive about being able to make ends meet as they continue with their monthly repayments amounting to close to S$2,300. The debts have been accumulated during the period when Madam Letch was struggling with her previous employment with a nett salary of only S$1,100 and with her daughter’s medical bills.

As she has only started her new employment on 15 March 2019, she has approached Ray of Hope for interim assistance for the next two months while she settles in on her new job, especially when her first salary will be prorated and will still be struggling with the debts repayment and to clear off the medical bills for her daughter.

Financial Breakdown

Madam Letch is currently receiving SSO assistance of S$130 (cash) as well as assistance for her rent, utilities and town council payments. However, her assistance is ending in April. With her increased salary, it is highly unlikely that her assistance renewal will be approved.

Therefore, ROH would like to raise $600 ($300 x 2 months) to defray the living expenses for Madam Letch and her daughter while the single mum settles in on her new job, with the potential discontinuation of her SSO assistance.
