About Transbefrienders
Recognising the lack of peer support for the youths with gender dysphoria (also known as transgender youth), Transbefrienders was started in 2019, by a group of volunteers from various backgrounds who have experienced living with gender dysphoria in Singapore.
Our mission: Through befriending and education, Transbefrienders strives to encourage, uplift and empower the transgender community in Singapore to enable them to gain confidence in contributing positively to society.
Our vision: To ensure no transgender youths are left behind.
What we do
Trans Youth Befriending Program – We provide appropriate information and emotional support to guide youths with gender dysphoria. We also act as an intermediary support for those who face long waiting times between diagnosis and treatment and assist with managing suicidal ideation; to prevent suicide attempts.
Subsidised Study Support Scheme – This scheme was initiated for students diagnosed with gender dysphoria who are currently lacking support in schools or are unable to find a school while undergoing treatment. We provide a safe space, free of prejudice and discrimination that is essential in a student’s learning journey. Additionally, we offer face-to-face tutoring for students with gender dysphoria who are taking GCE N, O & A levels and also sponsor the exam fee for private candidates with financial constraints.
Engagement Activities and Public Awareness – We conduct group support sessions, workshops and healthy activities for youths with gender dysphoria to gather and build their confidence. For example, we organised a financial workshop in 2020 (Project TransAid) to help cushion the impact of COVID-19 and teach youths how to better manage their finances. We also actively participate in dialogue sessions and events to raise public awareness on gender dysphoria and its effects.
For more information on our work or to get involved, please visit our website at www.transbefrienders.com or email us at info@transbefrinders.com.
What the funds will be used for
The proceeds of this fundraiser will be received by Ray of Hope to be paid out for Transbefrienders’ maintaining and running of the befriending program, supporting the education of youths with gender dysphoria, classroom rental and engagement activities.
Note: These funds are strictly for the purposes of supporting the execution of our programs and at no point will it be used as monetary compensation for our volunteers.

Dear Donors,
We thank you for your kind gesture and generous support for the transgender community.
In 2022, as part of our outreach programme, we hosted a public multimedia exhibition titled, Dysphoria/Euphoria. It was held at The Projector: Picturehouse (The Cathay), from 11 to 20 November (Transgender Awareness Week leading up to Transgender Day of Remembrance), which saw more than 8000 visitors including parents, counsellors and teachers. There were also parents of transgender youth who reached out to us at the exhibition for support and subsequently enrolled their child into our programmes.
Gender dysphoria is a distress arising from the incongruence between one’s gender identity and sexual characteristics or how others perceive them.
Gender dysphoria, if ignored, raises the risks of anxiety, depression, suicidality and other mental health issues. At the moment, gender transitioning is the only known way to effectively resolve this. However, transgender youths suffering from gender dysphoria often do not receive support from parents and schools due to the lack of understanding and misinformation. Therefore, we aim to bridge this gap by working with transgender youths and their parents, to provide appropriate information and emotional support as they go through the gender transitioning process.
We are also humbled to share that our first fundraising event on Ray of Hope has raised $3869, this amount will go towards building the capacity of our programmes and upskilling our volunteer befrienders to meet the needs of our beneficiaries. You may find out more about our work on our website https://transbefrienders.com/ or follow us on Facebook and Instagram.
Thank you once again and we hope to count on your unwavering support to create a better environment for transgender youths to flourish.
