Back in Bangladesh, Ziaur was supporting his elderly parents, his wife and their two school-going children. After arriving in Singapore in 2002, he was employed as a general construction worker, earning approximately $1,000 a month, which allowed him to remit $800 back to his family regularly.
In December 2021, while carrying a 50kg cement bag, Ziaur felt a sudden and sharp pain searing through his spine. Hoping that it was just a muscle sprain, Ziaur only visited the clinic. However the pain persisted even after a week and he was subsequently brought to the hospital. Ziaur was diagnosed with left lumbar 3/4 prolapsed interval disc and lumbar spondylosis.
Although Ziaur has completed two cycles of steroid injection, he still experiences pain in his lower back, especially with prolonged sitting and heavy lifting. Ziaur shared that he is unsure how long it would take for him to fully recover. Ziaur’s plight is compounded by the fact that he is currently unable to work and earn an income, leaving them in a state of financial uncertainty and distress. Despite the hardships and pain he faced, he has been diligently continuing his physiotherapy exercises with an NGO in hopes to recover quickly.
Ziaur is currently awaiting the results of his injury assessment and work injury compensation claim.
