Nashir’s family has always been his priority. Before the Covid Pandemic, Nashir earned an income by working as a fruit seller in Bangladesh. Unfortunately, amidst the chaos of the Pandemic, his business was unable to survive and he decided to venture overseas to seek employment. After arriving in Singapore in February 2020, he was employed as a shipyard worker, earning $900 a month, which allowed him to remit $600 back to his family regularly.
In March 2022, while doing ship maintenance, Nashir was descending from a ladder when he missed a step and fell 6-metres down. His fall caused him to severely injure his heels and spine. He was diagnosed with lumbar spine stenosis on top of the acute injuries he sustained. Although Nashir has undergone surgery, he still experiences pain and relies on his crutches to get around. This limits him as he still experiences persistent pain in his lower back and feet, affecting his mobility and his ability to resume work. Nashir shared that he is unsure how long it would take for him to fully recover. Despite the hardships and pain he faced, he has been diligently attending his doctor’s appointment in hopes to recover quickly.
Nashir is currently awaiting the results of his injury assessment and work injury compensation claim. Once he recovers, Nashir hopes to return to Bangladesh to reunite with his family, as well as to restart his business selling fruits that was once affected due to the COVID-19 situation.
