Brief background:
73-year-old Mr Lim and 65-year-old Mdm Tan who are currently retired but have limited financial savings for their retirement. Prior to retirement, both worked only part-time. Due to the nature of their previous employment, they have accumulated relatively small balances in their CPF accounts, including MediSave. As a result, they face financial uncertainty in sustaining their daily living and healthcare needs during retirement. In addition to financial concerns, both face ongoing health challenges. Mr Lim suffers from chronic heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, and requires long-term blood thinning medication and regular medical monitoring. Mdm Tan also manages chronic health issues, including low haemoglobin levels and high blood pressure, which require continuous medical care.

The couple has two adult children. Their younger child is married and has two young children, aged six and three. While the younger child has established their own family, their ability to provide substantial financial support is limited due to the responsibilities of raising young children. Their elder child remains unmarried and currently unemployed. He tends to be socially withdrawn, rarely participating in family gatherings and spending most of his time in his room. The family is deeply concerned about his wellbeing and future. The couple has expressed reluctance toward seeking assistance from government agencies such as Social Service Offices (SSOs) or applying for subsidies and support schemes.

Current Challenges:
With no stable income and limited retirement savings, the couple faces financial difficulty in meeting their daily living and healthcare expenses. Their medical conditions require regular follow-ups, medication, and possible specialist consultations. However, due to financial constraints, they have occasionally delayed or stopped medical consultations and treatments, especially when referred for specialist care, as they worry about the costs involved. To cope with these difficulties, they have been borrowing money from siblings, which places additional emotional and financial strain on their support network. To improve their financial situation, the couple is considering downsizing their current home to a 3-room flat in order to free up some funds for their retirement. Beyond financial issues, the family also faces emotional stress related to the elder son’s situation. His social withdrawal and lack of employment create additional worry for the elderly couple, who fear for his future while also managing their own ageing-related challenges.
