What happened to Rony?

On 18 November 2022, Rony was working on a ceiling hacking task using a 10KG demolition breaker at work. While on the job, he experienced a sudden sharp pain on his back and the pain subsequently spread to his lower body. The accident resulted in a prolapsed lumbar disc and spinal stenosis, which is a condition that narrows the spinal canal and compresses the nerves traveling through the lower back. The doctors have advised that Rony undergo Transforaminal Endoscopic Discectomy and Lumbar Compression, a procedure for the treatment of lower back pain due to a herniated disk.

Although Rony is scheduled for his surgery next month and is on the road to recovery, he has been struggling for his own livelihood while worrying about his family as through him, they have lost their main source of income and are in dire need since his accident last year.

27-year-old Rony is from Bangladesh and is married with a one-year-old son. He was employed to work in Singapore as a General Worker in the construction industry in 2016. Rony was earning between $900 to $1,000 a month with overtime, and would remit the bulk of his salary to his family for their living expenses. 

Back home, Rony was supporting his two elderly parents, wife and his son. Since the accident, Rony has lost the means to provide for his family. He is under immense stress to get himself treated so that he can continue working as soon as possible. Rony is scheduled to undergo surgery to treat his lower back injury next month. However, recovery may take at least two months post-surgery and he has concerns of finding suitable employment upon recovery. 

Adding on to his stress is the health condition of his one-year-old son, who will require treatment for pyloric stenosis – a swelling of the muscle between the stomach and intestines that causes forceful vomiting. The doctors in Bangladesh say that his son will require treatment for the next two years.

Rony is very worried as he is unable to support the medical needs of his son as he struggles to even afford basic necessities for himself. Despite the hardships and pain he faced, Rony has been diligently attending his doctor’s appointment and physiotherapy sessions in hopes to recover quickly.

“I never told my family the full extent of my injuries because I don’t want them to worry about me. I’m just praying I can go to work again after my surgery”, Rony told the caseworkers.
